To combat pollution, the fashion world has come up with a solution - vegan leather. Vegan leather is leather made without any animal products, meaning no animal involvement, testing or footprints allowed. The production process of traditional leather involves harmful PVC waste, which leads to environmental pollution and health risks. However, using vegan leather made of TENCEL™ fabric, certified by the European Union, eliminates these problems and reduces the burden on the Earth. Currently, the majority of vegan leather is made of polyurethane, a plastic derived from fossil fuels, creating its own set of environmental problems. However, some companies have started producing plant-based alternatives such as Piatex, a pineapple leaf fiber leather. Andras Forgacs, CEO of Modern Meadow, a company that produces materials without animals, said, "In the world we live in now, we want to eliminate both animal and fossil fuel-based products, so we need to create a third category of options."
In recent years, more brands producing vegan leather have been adopting environmentally friendly production methods, even using plant-based materials like pineapple skin instead of glue. Labs are also developing new materials made from mushrooms, green tea, sugar, and grapes which could further revolutionize the industry. With lab-grown leather, they are trying to change the entire industry.
