Leather items undergo normal wear and tear over time, so it is important to maintain them. Here are some tips:
Tip 1:
Avoid contact with any liquids, especially water, oil, juice, soup, coffee, and sweat. They can harm leather because it is made of protein fibers with breathable pores on the surface. High-end leather products usually have a thin coating or no coating at all to preserve the natural grain of the leather, and thus lack waterproofing. Any liquid that seeps into the pores can cause corrosion, fiber shrinkage, hardening, and discoloration.
Tip 2:
Avoid contact with colored items, such as pens, lipsticks, and nail polishes that can stain leather. Make sure these items are securely stored to prevent leakage. Colored stains can also penetrate leather through friction, especially from clothing that bleeds dye, such as denim.
Tip 3:
Avoid rubbing or scratching against other items as it can cause leather to lose its grain, fuzz, or even crack. Also, prevent contact with sharp objects that can create cuts and scratches, which may alter the natural pattern and style of the leather.
Tip 4:
Use leather items moderately to maintain their elastic and resilient properties. Otherwise, leather can permanently deform, lose its style, and fail to recover. It is advisable to use leather products for no more than three consecutive days at a time.
